I actually have that camera (it was my present to myself earlier this year). It's a good camera if you're kind of new to the (D)SLR scene. In addition to the manual setting it has preset settings (night/portrait/etc...). And there's also a 'guide' setting to walk you through setting up a manual shot (adjusting aperture, etc....) Most of the Nikkor lenses that you can get for it allow you to switch between auto-focus and manual-focus. The package I got came with the standard 18-55mm Nikkor AF-S VR lens and then I also got an extra lens that's a Nikkor 55-200mm AF-S DX VR Zoom Lens. All in all the complete package (which also included a case) cost me about $750 or so (but with the release of newer models, i.e. the D3001) the price on the D3000 may have gone down).

If you want to see example pictures I've taken with it, [My DeviantART Gallery] (pretty much every photo from "Beacon in the Night" to "Go Away" was taken with the D3000 - a few had post-processing work done in Photoshop.)

I have this exact camera and LOVE it! The family pictures in our thankful post were taken with it and I take all of Layla's photos with it. Like her 18 month pics on the side bar of our blog. It takes beautiful pictures and has a guide to help you through taking the kind of pictures you'd like. I have been so happy with it, it's exactly what I wanted, nothing to professional and that I couldn't handle. I think you'd be very pleased. It's very simple to learn. Good Luck!

You should totally get it! I think you would love it. Maybe you shouldn't get it and bring me along to Spain to take all pictures for you. Yeah, maybe that.
